PA trappers have been asked to collect raw furbearer skulls from all of the Pennsylvania furbearers. They are to be used for youth education in the Envirothon program. 67 full sets of skulls are needed (one for each county) so it is especially important for trappers to save the rarer skulls like bobcat, fisher, otter, and weasel. Please keep skulls frozen and contact your District Director, PTA State Officer, or Game Commission Regional Office about delivery or pickup. They may also be dropped off at any PA Game Commission Regional Office.

We will again be accepting donations of “put up” fur this year as a fundraiser for District #8. Just bring any pelts, no matter what species to a meeting and we will get them tanned to make hats, fur teddy bears and puppies. Sometimes if the donation is a really nice pelt we will keep it to sell as a “wall hanger”. All the proceeds go towards our efforts to educate the public, and cover the costs of things like our trapping school and our participation in Youth Field Days across the District.
Our first big event of the year will be our 3rd Annual Spring Sportsman’s Show on April 7th, 2018 at the Blain Picnic Grounds. The fun starts at 7:00 a.m and runs until 5:00 pm. We will have all the usual dealers with guns, traps, knives, hunting and fishing items, ammo, decoys, trapping supplies etc .We will have gun and bear trap raffles, 50/50 and more. Also this year there will be seminars and demos by The P.A. Game Commission on “Tree Stand Safety”, Dale and Robbie Rohm doing a turkey calling seminar, Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited will be doing a fly fishing program and our own Kirk Snyder from Opossum Hollow Lures speaking on the proper use of trapping baits, lures, and urine. Also the NWTF Sherman’s Valley Strutters Chapter will have the Daisy BB Gun Range for the kids. The Blain Fire company will be serving a great breakfast and lunch. We will also have our good friends from BOOTLLEG Creamery selling their famous ice cream, so come on out and have some fun while supporting District #8.
Admission at the gate for the whole show is only $5.00, and kids 12 and under are FREE! For info or to book dealer space, please call George McEntee@ 717- 732- 8099 or Terry Swartz @ 717- 536 3733. See the attached flyer for more info.
As I’m sure you have all heard by now the 81st PTA/ NATCA Rendezvous will be held June 7-10, 2018 at the Juniata County Fairgrounds in Port Royal Pa. This will be the first time in history that we have partnered with the North American Trap Collectors Association in putting on a Rendezvous! I’m sure Tom Parr and Co. will add a whole new dimension to this event. We have a ton of stuff planned for all ages, and something for everyone to enjoy.Camping is available for primitive and full hook-ups. The commemorative item for our Rendezvous is a beautiful working wooden mouse sized box trap. These were made for us by a turkey call factory and designed by Terry “Swamper” Swartz. We are offering them in cherry as well as a limited number in sassafras, walnut and maple. They will be available to purchase at Rendezvous for $30.00 each. As usual there will be demos by all the big names in the trapping community, master fur handling seminars every day by NAFA and Fur Harvesters of America, dealers and tailgaters galore, raffles, “3” BIG auctions, contests for young and old and great food! We will need all District #8 members to pitch in and help for this event, please consider lending a hand, even if for just a few hours. If we all do a little, no one has to do a lot! Please see the attached flyer for more info.
On August 11, 2018, District #8 will be hosting our annual Trapper Training School at the Richfield Sportsman’s Club, just off Route 35 in Juniata County. This free event is an all day school for trappers of all skill levels, young and old. You will learn everything from trap preparation to fur handling. *** Pre- registration is required.*** For more info, or to register for the school see the attached flyer or call George @ 717- 732- 8099.
Our last big event of the year will be our 40th annual PTA District #8 Outdoor Show at the Newville Lions Club Fairgrounds on Sept 15, 2018 from 7:00 a.m.- 5:00 pm. It’s only 5 miles off I-81 in Cumberland County. This show keeps getting better every year and there is so much to see and do its hard to get through it in a day! You can find anything and everything at this show, from new traps to guns to old ammo boxes and fishing lures, if you can’t find it here they never made it! This year our special guests will be Mossy Oak Pro-staffer and local turkey hunting legend, Matt Morrett showing you all the secrets of his success.
Also we have professional fishing guide and fly angler Tony Dranzo teaching you his methods for fall Trout and Steelhead fishing in P.A. Tony is a top notch guide and fly tying expert! While your at the show, DON”T forget to check out our BIG raffle ticket !!! As always our thanks goes out to our show sponsor, Sleepy Creek Manufacturing for their continued support of this event! Please see the attached flyer for more details or vendor space availability.
I would also like to let everyone know that District #8 is selling DVD’s of the PTA 2016 Rendezvous demos. The price is $16.00 each, that’s about half the price of your average trapping DVD and you get to support a great cause! These were filmed by KIFE ( Keystone Institute for Furbearer Education) at the Rendezvous and all proceeds benefit KIFE. If you would like to purchase one, please see Nelson at the meetings or give me a call.
On our BIG District #8 raffle ticket this year the top prize is a $500.00 gift certificate from Sleepy Creek Traps, as well as guns, cash and other prizes.Tickets are only 10.00 each and you have 10 chances to win on each ticket. Only 500 tickets will be printed. Also, we started a new program this year, for every 100 raffle tickets you sell, the seller will win $100.00. Don’t forget to write your name on the “seller” line on the tickets you sell so we can keep track. Good luck!
Also if you use PTA Facebook please “like and share” not only District events but everything you can, it really helps to promote the organization and our sport! In closing I would like to say “THANKS” to all the great folks that I have the privilege of working with in District #8. No matter what, you folks always answer the call when you are needed.
